Hirudin:

An anticoagulant (anti-clotting) agent that prevents thromboembolic complications (clots that travel through the blood stream to clog up a vessel). Hirudin is the active principle in the secretion of leeches. Desirudin and lepirudin (REFLUDAN) are genetically engineered recombinant forms of hirudin.
